To improve productivity, the cultivation of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) and potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is in many cases carried out by the intercropping system, however, this system should not have adverse affect due to allelopathy. This study aimed to analyze the allelopathic effect between chilli and potato plants based on the growth of the plants and to qualitatively examine the allelochemical contained in the growth media. This experiment was carried out using a completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatments. In the first treatment (P1), chilli and potato seeds were planted on a media previously used by other plants from the same species for two weeks; the second treatment (P2), chilli and potato seedlings were planted on a media previously used for other plants from different species for two weeks; and the third treatment (P3), chilli and potato seedlings were planted side by side on the same medium for three weeks. Control (K) in the form of chilli and potato seeds were planted in monoculture for three weeks. The results showed that there was an allelopathic effect between chilli and potato plants which inhibited the growth of chilli. Chilli plants also have an autotoxicity effect that inhibits the growth of their species. Growth media of chilli that interacted with potato plants (treatments P2 and P3), as well as all potato growing media were positively contained alkaloids, suggesting that allelopathic effects between the two plants which caused growth inhibition were presumably due to alkaloid compounds.
